Just Say No to Jerks

When a new person from an organization approaches our company … looking at our services … we quickly force a conversation.

We do this because we are relational as a company … and, conversations reveal a lot for us! You see, we quickly help our prospects understand that we are qualifying them just as much as they are qualifying us.

In the realm of “virtual” it is too easy to objectify our team and think we are all slave robots. A lot of potential Clients (that we turn away & do not work with) demonstrate the way they will treat us during the sales process. Below is an example eMail exchange from last week with a sales prospect. I am really proud of our Sales Reps (we call them Problem Solvers & Happiness Makers – seriously). They are our “filter” to keep crazy Clients out.

To leaders everywhere … be BRAVE and BOLD in protecting your Team against people who can potentially bring you opportunity! Would you want to work with this guy below? Would you want him barking orders at your precious Team that  you have worked so hard to develop? I don’t think so. By keeping jerks out of your organization as Clients … you protect everything & everyone in your organization. One of the greatest tests of a leader … is to say “no” to opportunity … in the interest of protecting your team, your organization, your passion, & your brand.

QUESTION: Regardless of whether you are non-profit or for-profit, you have opportunity presented to you … so, how do you keep “Crazy” out?

So I officially ran into my first jerk. However, he is quite witty ….

He said that he would only communicate by email. I sent an email stating that I could answer some basic questions by email, but our services are tailored to our clients so it is important that we get to know him. Below is his response. :-)

I do not have any time in my schedule for an extended phone conversation full of questions. I prefer things be done in writing. This is why I’m looking for an assistant. Maybe I’ll hire one and she can call you …

Love this!  Reminds me  of Iyanla Vanzant saying something along the lines of when you see crazy coming towards you, cross the street. Too often we think any work is better than no work.  But crazy actually takes up a lot of space and energy for us non-jerks.

Well said! In a classic sense, this is a form of business focus … to say no to certain prospects & yes to others. Know what qualifies as your “yes” and “no” is key. Thanks for your comment!
